History

The herd originated from the Windsor Park strain of Red Deer and actually happened by accident. Many years ago, a trailer load of deer rolled at the nearby Makapua Bridge and the escapees are the nucleus of the indigenous Red Deer herd on Makapua.

Colin has consistently culled inferior stags to raise the quality of the trophy heads roaming the Makapua bush today. This means when the roar comes around there is always a good number of high quality animals at Makapua. Originally, hunting was banned to allow the proliferation of these majestic wild animals on the property. Selective hunting was then introduced with only limited numbers of trophy stags taken during the roar.

The first hunters were a couple of well known businessmen 13 years ago and since then Makapua has maintained a nearly 100 percent satisfaction rating from its clients.
